Awesome litte camera - battery life stinks

By TnT "luveducationalstuff" (USA)

This review is from: Nikon COOLPIX P500 12.1 CMOS Digital Camera with 36x NIKKOR Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens and Full HD 1080p Video (Black)

6-7-11:
I returned this camera to Costco after only having it for 5 days. My Costco is now out of them. I am unsure if I should buy it from another one, or get a different camera.

The only digital cameras I've owned are Canon ELPHs. I wanted something with a better zoom, and would take better low light pictures. From what I had before, this camera is awesome and fit my need.

My husband did not care for the way the camera zoomed while in video mode. It zooms in and out quite fast, not giving a smooth video. Perhaps that is just something we needed to play around with.

My MIL has a Canon XS30IS. We compared some side by side pics. The Nikon zoom is better. I think some of her pictures were better quality, but it's really a toss on that. I feel her camera takes better video. I do like the way her screen could flip around and be protected, and not always have the screen facing out like on the Nikon. I don't know, each screen is different in how it moves but having the option to have it more protected is nice. The Canon also had a shoe for a flash, which the Nikon did not (I am not one to use anything like that anyway. Well, for now....).

I returned this camera due to battery issues. I've read a lot of reviews that have mentioned a low battery life, so I expected that. However, my battery needed charging only after about 85 pictures. From the first charge, the camera would never stopping the charging blink to show the battery was charged. I called Nikon to inquire about the issue and find a remedy. They told me when the battery needed recharging, to charge it and watch the light. It should only need to charge for 2 - 2 1/2 hours. I kept eye on the camera, and even after 3 hours the charging light would not stop blinking. When I called them to report back in, they told me I could send it in to them to fix that issue...go out and buy another charger and battery...or return it to Costco. The camera was only 5 days old! To me if something this small is not correct, I didn't want to keep the camera. I was hoping to just exchange it for another, but since Costco was out I could not. I'm trying to decide if I should spend $20 in gas to go to another Costco that has these in-stock...buy from here...or just go to Best Buy. Or do I get a Canon like my MIL (not sure I can believe I am actually saying that)? I want my camera! I did enjoy using it while it lasted.

6-9-11:
After playing with my MIL Canon XS30IS today, I decided the Nikon takes better pictures and zooms better. Colors are more vibrant as well. I don't like the Canon screen flipping out to the side, it's also heavier and the size difference is enough that I felt like the Canon was almost too small for my hands. Tonight I found another Costco with the Nikon P500 instock, so I bought it to try out again. I'll update once it's charged and ready to go! If this one doesn't work right either, I'll contemplate a third time or just settling for the Canon.
